Writing Journal Update 11

College and Life Updates: So someone near my husband tested positive for COVID-19, and he and I both had to get tested. I woke up symptomatic recently after two days feeling fatigued, but it was most likely a cold or sinus trouble (or also likely, stress), as my husband and I have tested negative since. School is becoming a bit stressful, but most of that is due to the fact that I’m dreading the new quarantine my husband and I have put on ourselves “just in case.” I’ve turned in the first draft of my fantasy story, the final draft of my essay on gender in video games (featuring Krem from Dragon Age: Inquisition), and worked on my internship. Also, I’ve rediscovered my love for Terraria (if you haven’t played it, and you like Minecraft, give it a try on your PC).

"The Day Caroline Bloomed": This story has been accepted at The Dread Machine.

“Untitled Dark Fantasy Piece”: So, after writing this failed short story draft, my professor pointed out that it seemed more like a prologue than an actual short story. So, now I have a book project to work on during my gap year before graduate school. Yay (that’s not sarcasm, I needed a good project for that year)! I also will not be revealing anything about it, as nothing is set in stone currently.

“Untitled Horror Story”: So, I planned on setting this story in a familiar location, but that may cause a few personal problems. More on that later. It’s still a criticism of “Southern heritage” and all that it entails. It’s probably going to be the first story that didn’t make its deadline.

Publishing News: My short story, “The Orchid’s Crimson Maw” has been published in The Dread Machine, so if you prefer to read fiction (horror), you can read that here. My essay, “Of Anxiety,” has been published in Breath and Shadow. You can read it here. This essay won the Creative Nonfiction Award at UT Chattanooga and concerns my experiences with different levels of anxiety.

Personal Readings: The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult (novel), The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates (horror, novel), Devil’s Creek by Todd Keisling (novel, horror), Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer (science fiction, horror, novel), “Second Chances” by Stephen Graham Jones (short story, dark fiction), Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (audiobook, thriller), Black Static Issue #76 (horror, literary journal)

Finished: Bird Box by Josh Malerman

I’m making no more promises here until winter break, which will occur sometime in November.
