Writing Journal Update 6
Note: So I couldn’t stay away from these. They’re too much fun. I’m going to do an update once a week on top of (or instead of, depending on how much time I have) another blog post.
College Updates: I am officially done with the summer semester! I loved the classes I took over the summer, but I need the two-week break that I get before the fall semester starts. My last lab activity involved “muscle memory.” I basically had to trace a star shape using a mirror with something blocking the view of my hands.
Update 2: I have one more week left in Moanaria’s Fright Club Workshop. I’ll be writing about my experience once it’s all over (spoiler alert: it’s a very positive one). I also have taken a short, at-your-own-pace writing course that I’m hoping to review soon.
A Lovely Verse: I had to put this on hold to focus on college and Fright Club.
“Argent Allergy”: This is the very first werewolf story I have ever written. I combined my knowledge of seizures with a bit of lycanthropy. I’m actually pretty proud of the twist—no one has caught it yet. This one has been accepted for publication in Breath and Shadow for their Winter 2020 issue.
“Powerful Cravings and Phantoms”: This I based on the idea of a haunted syringe that addicts use, but it developed into so much more. A ghostly revenge story brought about by a used syringe. This one may never see an editor’s inbox, but it was pretty fun to write.
“Shedding”: This is the first story I’ve set in my hometown. It follows a toxic friendship and one woman’s desire to get out of it before it’s too late. This one needs work before sending it out.
“Voracious”: I created a cryptid I fondly called “Bullfrog Man” after my mother gained an obsession with raising bullfrogs. This story was actually a lot of fun to write, as I use epistolary format (the entire story is written in diary entries). It has a gruesome ending and also needs some serious work before I send it out.
Publishing news: “Lithium” has been published at On Loan From the Cosmos.
Personal Readings: The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix (horror, audiobook), Out of Water by Sarah Read (horror, short story collection), Night to Dawn 38, and The Last Piece by Imogen Clark (literary, novel)
Finished: Thrill Me by Benjamin Percy, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior, Black Static Issue #75
There will be news on upcoming stories and other blog posts in the coming weeks.
